Boil Holes

A boil hole looks like a sinkhole. In a shallow karst setting—where the underground river is about 30 feet down—floodwater boils up from underground like a fountain or geyser. Boil holes can open suddenly, just like sinkholes. If the sewage treatment plant were to be built inside a floodwall, boil holes can erupt anywhere within the perimeter, even if a dike could prevent a flood from the surface river. Flowing water can undermine structures, such as 15 million pound raw sewage tanks.
